Picturing a Frame Within a Picture Frame

Options: Frames come in all shapes and sizes. Some surround an entire background subject, while other frames are partial ones: i.e., side, bottom, or top. Examples of framing devices include overhanging tree branches, arches, windows, doors, sculptures, fences, looming rock formations, fountains, flowers, architectural elements, a companion’s outstretched arm, or a nearby hot-air balloon in a colorful race.

Composition: Although a foreground border often spotlights your center of interest, an extra-special frame sometimes serves as the primary subject itself. Also, a frame can show a subject in relation to its surroundings and can even produce a three-dimensional effect, in which the scene sweeps away from front to back

n addition, a border can help clean up a composition – by concealing distracting objects or by filling up a featureless sky. Occasionally you can use more than one frame – for instance, picturing a subject through the openings on separate walls of an old building.Wide Look: An exclusive “storytelling” perspective – the ability to combine intimate details with distant views in the same picture – makes the wide-angle a valuable tool for creating frame shots. The wide-angle also helps strengthen the sense of depth, since a close-at-hand foreground appears larger in relation to the background.

Tele Views: A telephoto or tele-zoom offers its own unique look for framing. Use it to compress space – in other words, to make the frame and backdrop appear closer together than they really are.

Be careful of lighting extremes – say, if your frame is in shadow and your subject is in sunlight. A camera can’t record good color and details in both sunlit and shadowed areas at the same time.Fill-in flash, however, could lighten up a shadowed foreground. But if that dark object is sharply outlined, easily identifiable, and set against a bright background, consider going for a striking silhouette to spotlight your distant subject. To achieve a silhouette, make sure your meter registers the sunlit areas of the scene and not the shaded frame.

Depth of Field: Most foreground frames look best if they are in sharp focus; others work more effectively when they are in soft focus (say, to emphasize a crisp-and-clear background subject).

3 digital Photography Tips

1. AVOID CONTRASTY SITUATIONS

Extremes in contrast are a problem for both film and digital photography, but it is especially a problem when shooting digital. When the highlights and shadows are too extreme, the detail in both areas are in jeopardy of being lost. Even you try to “average” the exposure, a compromise between the light and dark areas, the shadows tend to go black and the highlights are washed out.

With digital photography, even a subtle difference in contrast can mean the complete loss in detail in the highlights. A light area on the bridge of the nose, for example, that would show detail in a negative can easily be blown out on a chip.

Therefore, try your best to avoid contrasty situations. Patchy lighting is a classic example of what to avoid, but I’ve seen portraits done on overcast days (it was a bright overcast) that show a loss of detail in skin tone because the contrast was just a little too much for digital cameras to handle. Note: Jim Zuckerman teaches many more digital photography tips in several BetterPhoto courses: Mastering Light; Making Money with Your Wedding Photographers in Pittsburgh; Eight Steps to More Dramatic Photography; Creative Techniques in Photoshop; Fundamentals of Photography, and many more.

2. REDUCING YOUR FLASH OUTPUT

If you have problems with the flash on your compact digital camera being too strong, here’s a solution. First, if you can program your flash to output less (by setting it to -1, or -2, etc.) do that. But if you find that it’s still putting out too much light, hold your index finger partly over the flash head when it makes the picture.

It would seem illogical, but flash output is so powerful that this actually does the trick. Not only has this been very successful in knocking down the light output for me, it has also warmed up the light of the flash. The light of the flash going through your finger will be softer, more subdued, and much warmer.

3. REMEMBER YOUR CAMERA SETTINGS

It’s easy to change white balance, ISO, etc., in your camera settings, all within the same photography session. But it’s not always so easy to remember to change those settings back – especially while in the heat of the excitement! We take care of this problem with a piece of colored gaffer tape, which we move into an area that can be seen easily as a reminder that we have made a change to the original settings. This is critically important when using exposure compensation. After returning your setting(s) back to normal, then we place the tape in a spot where it does not get much attention. This tape can be reused in this manner many times and will still adhere well and does not leave any residue.

Retouching And Improving Your Photographs

Digital imaging and more specifically Adobe Photoshop as well as other image editingsoftware have revolutionized photography. The advances in digital image manipulation now allow for unlimited possibilities in the area of improving photographs through retouching and restoration.

What types of improvements are possible by retouching photographs with Photoshop?

Blemishes

Embarrassing skin blemishes like acne or scars can easily be removed using the retouching tools available in Adobe Photoshop. You can learn these Photoshop techniques in minutes.

Damage to Prints

The benefits of digital imaging for restoring old damaged or worn out photographs are one of the best reasons to learn Photoshop. Once an old photograph is scanned it can be retouched to remove tears in the paper or water marks. You can also restore colors that have faded over time. Once you have retouched your image and it is like new again it will last forward because digital images do not deteriorate over time like prints.

Closed Eyes

This is one of the most common problems with group photographs. You finally got the entire family together for a family photograph including Aunt Martha only to find that she closed her eyes. Closed eyes are not a problem for a skilled user of Photoshop. You can easily open her eyes and no one will ever know.

Removing unwanted Subjects

Not only can you remove blemishes in Adobe Photoshop but another common use of Photoshop’s retouching capabilities involves removing unwanted people or objects. Old boyfriends can be forever removed from photographs quickly and easily if you know what you are doing.

Retouching photographs has never been easier than it is today. Photoshop and other photographic editing software applications have made it a breeze to open closes eyes, remove blemishes and scars, change colors, restore old damaged photographs and remove unwanted objects.
