- Be Steady: One of the prime lessons of digital photography is to keep your hands steady while pressing shutter. In case hands shake when the shutter is pressed, the picture will appear blurred. To avoid such destabilization, try to keep your balance while shooting. Keep your hands closer to your body and firmly hold the camera and press shutter with pad of your index finger. For pictures with slow shutter speed or long exposures using a tripod gives best results.
- Balance Composition: Composing a picture is vital lesson of digital photography. While composing a picture make sure about the position of your subject or object of interest. Photography is about communicating. It is important that your subject should be properly composed and balanced with background and surroundings to appeal to a viewer. To help you compose a picture many digital cameras provide grid lines where four lines intersect at four points (much like tic-tac-toe board). Whenever you focus the subject these gridlines appear. ‘Rule of third’ about composition states, you should put your subject on any of these points of intersection. This means you should avoid putting your subject at center of a photo, just put it slightly off middle.
- Lighting: Another important lesson of digital photography is about keeping an eye on lighting. Late afternoon and early morning are best time to take pictures. At these times, sunlight is not glaring to cast shadows on subjects. Illumination is balanced and optimum. If you are taking pictures in mid afternoon or late morning then make sure that the sun is not at back of your subject. It can make your subject dark. It is best to keep sun at your back, if that is not possible then try to position your subject at an angle to the sun and shoot from an angle to avoid direct sunlight on your camera. If this cannot be done, then use flash to fill the shadows. However, make sure that the subject is within range of your flash.
- Capture Moving Objects: Using slow shutter speed to capture a moving object clearly is useful lesson of digital photography. This can be done by pre-focusing the subject and pressing the shutter halfway while keeping the subject in focus. Now press the shutter all the way down to shoot. If the shutter speed is not adjusted then a moving object will appear blurry.
- Different Modes: Use night modes while shooting pictures in dark. If the subject is located too far away then using flash may not work. At night mode the camera adjusts to slow shutter speed and increase exposure time to catch subject in real lighting condition. Use macro mode to take close up shots of a subject in details.
