The Preset Icons in a Camera
The cameras often come with various icons on their dials with which you can shoot under different conditions. Sometimes AUTO mode fails to give you your desired result. - Landscape Mode: This mode is shown on the dial with picture of hills or mountains. This mode gives the maximum depth of field, and that means the aperture is set to the minimum. So you get a picture where the foreground objects and background objects remain equally sharp. In this mode the flash remains off and you should be careful that in low light condition the shutter speed is set to low. So there is a lot of chances of shake and the result is blurred picture. The mode also enhances the greens and blues.
- Portrait Mode: You will find that there is icon showing a person’s face. Here the opposite of landscape occurs. The flash remains on, the aperture is often set to maximum and the warm skin tones are enhanced. High aperture gives the effect where you find the subject sharp with a blurred background. If you want this effect to be more effective then it is better to zoom on the subject.
- Sports Mode: The icon is a running person. In this mode the shutter speed is set to maximum but often the camera increases the ISO setting in low light condition to compensate for the high shutter speed. You may thus get grains in the final image. However, if you want to ‘freeze’ the subject then you will have to use this mode.
- Night Mode: The icon for this mode is the picture of a moon with or without a star. The camera sets the shutter speed and ISO to minimum. This enables shooting beautiful night time shots that show the cars streaking across the image and streets illuminated with neon lights.
- Macro Mode: This mode is meant for shooting objects from extreme close up of around 5 to 10 cm or even lower. A great mode for shooting tiny flowers and insects and also good for close ups of new born. Some cameras allow zooming in this mode while most disable the zoom.
